The USS Sarita was an Artemis Class AKA (Auxiliary Cargo Assault Transport) Ship in WWII. In 1945 my father served aboard her on a tour to Japan and the Philippines. This is a chronicle of that time.

John, I am so happy you have posted all this great history about the USS Sarita. I have recently stubbled upon my grandfather's dicharge paper which stated he was part of the crew on this ship. I was hopping you might be able to tell me if you have any other information about the crew in the photos. My grandfather was a Machinist. We are looking for more information about him. Unfortunately he did not talk about his life with us and sadly he passed of lung cancer in 2001. I am trying to trace my family tree so Any information will help. Thank you so Much Melissa Martin
I'm glad you found the site. Unfortunately I have included all the information that came with the photos. I have the few stories my dad related to me, but like your grandfather, he never talked much about his time on the ship. As far as I know the photos contain most of the crew that were assigned to the Sarita on her maiden voyage. I hope you can find your grandfather in these photos. If you do, please let me know where he is in the photo and his name so I can update the list.
I know that the Sarita was one of the first ships to arrive in Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was in route for the invasion of Japan when word came of the bombings and surrender, a great relief to the people aboard.. It carried supplies in and continued to Sasebo Japan where it was stationed for a while until it ferried troops home after the war.
The photos and came from my dad's war photo album and not many were documented with descriptions. The crew photos were official navy photos. Sorry I can't be of more help with specific information. Again I'm happy you found the site,
